Chuck Schumer said Monday that there will be services to honor the late Senator Bob Dole at the this week, but there have not yet been any announcements on whether the Republican political giant will lie in state at the U.S.Capitol following his passing Sunday morning.

‘There will also be services at the Capitol to honor the life of our former colleague, Senator Bob Dole, this week,’ the majority leader wrote in a letter to his Democratic Caucus.

He added: ‘More information will be sent out as soon as plans are finalized.’

Former Republican Senator Bob Dole died at the age of 98 Sunday morning — nearly a year after announcing his lung cancer diagnosis.

No formal plans have been announced yet, and the Dole Institute told DailyMail.com that any information related to funeral services and arrangements will be ‘released on obertdole.org in the coming days.’

Hours after his death, President Joe Biden ordered all U.S.flags on public ground to fly at half-staff until sunset on December 9 to honor the political giant.

And the day after his death written by Dole meant for release around the time of his death where the life-long Republican politician called for unity.

The Post noted: ‘This column was drafted early in 2021 to be published around the time of his death.’

‘America has never achieved greatness when Republicans and Democrats simply manage to work together or tolerate each other,’ Dole wrote in the op/ed.’We have overcome our biggest challenges only when we focused on our shared values and experiences. These common ties form much stronger bonds than political parties.’

Dole was one of the few politicians to gain more popularity once leaving office and was the first defeated presidential nominee to become a political celebrity.

After ending his political career with his 1996 presidential defeat, Dole went out to become a spokesman for freedom several products — including Viagra, Dunkin’ Donuts, Visa and Pepsi-Cola where he appeared alongside Britney Spears in a commercial.

He became an occasional political commentator on Larry King Live and was a guest several times on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. For a short time, Dole was even a commentator opposite Bill Clinton on CBS’s 60 Minutes.

Dole made a cameo appearance on Saturday Night Live in November 1996 where he parodied himself.

‘It is with heavy hearts we announce that Senator Robert Joseph Dole died early this morning in his sleep,’ the Elizabeth Dole Foundation tweeted on Sunday.

‘At his death, at age 98, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 79 years.More information coming soon,’ the statement continues.

Donald Trump also paid tribute on Sunday, saying: ‘Bob Dole was an American war hero and true patriot for our Nation.

‘He served the Great State of Kansas with honor and the Republican Party was made stronger by his service. Our Nation mourns his passing, and our prayers are with Elizabeth and his wonderful family.’

In February 2021, Dole announced he was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer and in July 2021 was receiving immunotherapy to treat the disease, forgoing chemotherapy due to its negative effect on his body.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered flags at the U.S.Capitol to be flown at half-staff upon the news of Dole’s death.

Dole served in the Senate for 27 years and was the Republican presidential nominee in 1996, losing to incumbent Bill Clinton.

Before that, President Gerald Ford chose Dole as his running mate in the 1976 election after Vice President Nelson Rockefeller withdrew from seeking a full term.Ford was defeated by Democrat Jimmy Carter in the general election.

Dole also sought the Republican presidential nomination in 1980, but quickly dropped out of the race he was also defeated in the 1988 Republican primaries by Vice President George H.W. Bush.

He represented Kansas in the Senate and during the final 11 years of his tenure served as the Republican Leader of the upper chamber, which included three nonconsecutive years as Senate Majority Leader.

First entering politics as a member of the Kansas House of Representatives in 1951, Dole then served as a County Attorney there before being elected to the U.S.House of Representatives.

Dole leaves behind his wife Elizabeth, 85, and daughter Robin, 67.

Shortly after arriving back at the White House from Camp David on Sunday afternoon, President Joe Biden sent a statement on Dole’s passing.

‘A month after being sworn in as President, one of the first conversations I had with anyone outside the White House was with our dear friends, Bob and Elizabeth Dole, at their home in Washington,’ Biden wrote.’Bob had recently been diagnosed with lung cancer, and I was were there (sic) to offer the same support, love, and encouragement that they showed me and Jill when our son Beau battled cancer, and that the Doles have shown us over the half century we’ve been friends.’

Biden served as a U.S.senator with Dole for 24 years.

‘In the Senate, though we often disagreed, he never hesitated to work with me or other Democrats when it mattered most,’ Biden said in his statement.

‘Bob was an American statesman like few in our history,’ he added.’A war hero and among the greatest of the Greatest Generation. And to me, he was also a friend whom I could look to for trusted guidance, or a humorous line at just the right moment to settle frayed nerves. I will miss my friend. But I am grateful for the times we shared, and for the friendship Jill and I and our family have built with Liddy and marx the entire Dole family.’

‘Bob was a man to be admired by Americans. He had an unerring sense of integrity and honor. May God bless him, and may our nation draw upon his legacy of decency, dignity, good humor, and patriotism for all time.’

Dole’s family released a statement on his passing hours after announcing his death.

‘Thank you for the outpouring of love over the last year, it continues to sustain us as we grieve the loss of a  precious man we knew as husband and father,’ the family of Dole wrote.’Bob Dole was never only ours — we shared him with Americans from every walk of life and every political persuasion.’

‘He was a powerful voice for pragmatic conservatism, and it was that unique Kansan combination of attributes and values that made him such a giant of the Senate.’

Tributes to the political giant poured in from other past presidents on Sunday afternoon, including from Dole’s former opponent Bill Clinton.

‘Bob Dole dedicated his entire life to serving the American people, from his heroism in World War II to the 35 years he spent in Congress. After all he gave in the war, he didn’t have to give more. But he did. His example should inspire people today and for generations to come,’ Clinton wrote on Twitter along with a photo of Dole at George H.W. Bush’s funeral.

Barack Obama expressed condolences for Dole’s widow while also appearing to take a jab at the modern-day Republican party.

‘Senator Bob Dole was a war hero, a political leader, and a statesman—with a career and demeanor harkening back to a day when members of the Greatest Generation abided by a certain code, putting country over party,’ the popular Democratic commander-in-chief wrote in his statement.

‘Our thoughts are with Elizabeth and the Dole family.’

Republican George W.Bush called Dole a ‘good man’ who ‘represented the finest of American values.’

‘I will always remember Bob’s salute to my late dad at the Capitol, and now we Bushes salute Bob and give thanks for his life of principled service,’ he said, referencing a famous image in which a wheelchair-bound and frail Dole stood up with assistance to salute the elder Bush’s coffin.

‘Laura and I send our heartfelt condolences to Elizabeth and join our fellow citizens in prayer for her comfort.’

Current Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell also paid his respects to Dole, one of his predecessors in the role.

‘Bob’s lifetime of service was rooted in a simple mission: looking out for his neighbors,’ McConnell wrote.

‘Bob Dole lived the kind of full, rich, and deeply honorable American life that will be impossible for any tribute today to fully capture. As we mourn this most distinguished American son, we send our sincerest condolences to the entire Dole family.’

The late senator was also close with John McCain, a fellow wounded warrior and Arizona Republican senator who died of brain cancer in 2018.

McCain’s widow Cindy tweeted on Sunday: ‘Rest In Peace Bob Dole. You are the last of the lions of the Senate.’

Dole, unlike McCain, was admittedly a ‘Trumper.’

In Trump’s 2016 run for president, Dole was one of the few elders of the traditional Republican establishment to endorse him and was the only former presidential nominee to attend the convention that nominated Trump.

He did, however, say there was no question that Trump lost his reelection race in 2020.

‘He lost the election, and I regret that he did, but they did,’ Dole said.’He had Rudy Giuliani running all over the country, claiming fraud. He never had one bit of fraud in all those lawsuits he filed and statements he made.’

‘I’m a Trumper,’ Dole told USA Today in a July interview, claiming also: ‘I’m sort of Trumped out, though.’

Trump sent out a statement honoring Dole from his Office of the 45th President email.

‘Bob Dole was an American war hero and true patriot for our Nation,’ Trump wrote.’He served the Great State of Kansas with honor and the Republican Party was made stronger by his service. Our Nation mourns his passing, and our prayers are with Elizabeth and his wonderful family.’

North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer released a statement on Dole’s passing, calling him a ‘hero to millions.’

‘One of the most influential leaders of my life was Senator Bob Dole,’ the Republic senator wrote.’His legacy is seen throughout the world and especially in America’s Midwest. He was a hero to millions, including me. Today we mourn his death and celebrate his contributions through a life very well lived.’

Senator Roger Marshall, who now served as a Republican senator from Kansas released a statement on Dole’s passing: ‘Today, Kansas and our entire nation are heartbroken having lost a giant with the passing of Senator Bob Dole.’

‘As one of the heroes from our greatest generation, you would be hard pressed to find someone with a bigger heart and liberal more resilient than Senator Dole,’ Marshall continued.

Kansas Senator Roger Marshall sent out an image of himself with Dole with a statement: ‘I will forever be humbled and honored to follow in his footsteps here in Congress. Each day I walk the halls of the Capitol, I recognize the boots I wore in the House and now in the Senate, were once worn by Senator Dole and on days like this, those boots look mighty large’

‘I will forever be humbled and honored to follow in his footsteps here in Congress. Each day I walk the halls of the Capitol, I recognize the boots I wore in the House and now in the Senate, were once worn by Senator Dole and on days like this, those boots look mighty large. There is no doubt, Laina and I are blessed to consider him as one of our greatest role models, a mentor, and a dear friend.’

He added: ‘Senator Dole always imparted the best advice to me, which was to ‘always remember where you are from’ and when there is ‘any problem too big, just go listen to the people of Kansas — they will give you the answer.’

‘He was forever a Kansan who always put service above self and was profoundly dedicated to bettering the lives of all those in our great state.’

In October, the Republican National Committee passed a resolution honoring Dole and his wife and daughter for their ongoing service to our country in celebration his 98th birthday.

‘The Republican Party holds Elizabeth Dole and the Dole family in our prayers,’ RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a Sunday statement.

‘Bob Dole was a World War 2 hero, RNC Chairman, U.S.Senator, and GOP nominee for President, exemplifying the very best of our party and our country. His dedication to our nation is a testament to his legacy of service, and we all owe Bob Dole and his family an immense debt of gratitude. Rest in peace, Bob Dole.’

Born in Russell, Kansas in 1923, Dole joined thousands of young men in his time by signing up to fight in World War II as part of the Army reserves.

He was deployed to Italy as a second lieutenant in 1944 where he was nearly killed by a German explosive during combat in the mountainous Apennine region.

In 1945 Dole led the assault near Castel D’Aiano and was struck just as he was helping a fallen soldier.

‘As the mortar round, exploding shell, or machine gun blast — whatever its was, I’ll never know — ripped into my body, I recoiled, lifted off the ground a bit, twisted in the air, and fell face down in the dirt,’ Dole recounted in his autobiography One Soldier’s Story.

He waited an agonizing nine hours before medics could evacuate him to a local field hospital.

Once back home Dole was forced to undergo multiple surgeries and three years of rehabilitation, and never fully regained function in his right arm, only able to move his fingers. For the rest of his public life he carried a pen in that hand to make it appear more normal and deter people from shaking hands with him on that side.

But Dole had said in past interviews it was the injury and the possibility of facing a life where it consumed him that helped push him into politics.

‘In moments of self-pity, I saw myself going through life unmarried, selling pencils on street corners and living off a disability pension,’ he told The Topeka-Capital Journal in a past interview, adding that his doctor ‘In moments of self-pity, I saw myself going through life unmarried, selling pencils on street corners and living off a disability pension.’

It also turned him into a disability rights advocate, starting the Dole Foundation in 1983 to support people living with disabilities and was a key advocate for 1990’s landmark Americans with Disabilities Act.
